~In this data session, I discuss (mostly positive) interactions between graffiti artists and passers-by in Brazil. The topic of these interactions is the distinction between "traditional" graffiti and picho or pixo (a Brazilian variant of graffiti). The latter is widely regarded as a form of vandalism, and most Brazilians are hostile to it. In cases 1-3, traditional graffiti artists accentuate the differences between traditional graffiti and picho. In case 4, the artist mitigates such differences, casting both styles as part of a similar political project. Importantly, in cases 1-3, artists use their interlocutors' age category to cast them as "outsiders," therefore unable to comprehend the complex relationship between traditional graffiti and picho. In such cases, accentuating the differences allows them to avoid adversarial interactions with passers-by.
Foremost, I plan to use these interactions to address broad criminological and sociological discussions about the social construction of deviance (and abidance) and the role of aesthetic choices in these constructions. These videos could also be relevant to CA studies about social categories and epistemics.
